Tabbed File Explorer finally arrives in Windows 11, along with other new features

Microsoft announced the availability of Windows 11 2022 (22H2) a month ago, but some of the promised new features, most notably an updated version of File Explorer with tabs, were missing from that release.

Microsoft did say these experiences would be "coming in October" and after a period of testing in the Release Preview Channel, they are now available to all users starting from today.

Apple unveils redesigned iPad and next generation iPad Pro with M2 Chip

A month ago, Apple took the wraps off its new range of iPhones. I was impressed enough to shell out on an iPhone 14 Pro, although it seems like it might not be quite as durable as advertised.

Today, with little fanfare, Apple announces new versions of both the iPad and the iPad Pro.

New durability tests show Apple iPhone 14 prone to significant damage when dropped

I recently upgraded to the iPhone 14 Pro, and one of the first things I did was to drop it. Not on purpose, or as part of some amazing durability test, but just because I was juggling too many things at once, and the most expensive thing that I was holding (by some way!) was the thing that hit the deck.

Fortunately, it sustained no damage, but not every clumsy iPhone owner will be as lucky.

New version of Windows 95 runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with dedicated builds for ARM-based systems

Windows 95

I hated Windows 95 when I first used it back in 1995, purely because it was so different from what I was used to. I soon came to realize the error of my ways and it introduced many of the features we still use today, including a desktop, taskbar and Start button.

Slack developer Felix Rieseberg released Windows 95 as an Electron app four years ago, updating it shortly afterwards to allow it to run gaming classics like Doom. Now he rolls out a new version which can run on any Windows, Mac or Linux system.

Microsoft's Surface Laptop 5 is faster, but that's about it

Earlier today, Microsoft unveiled the latest model in its Surface Pro range, the Surface Pro 9.

The company also debuted a new model of its Surface Laptop. The upgraded device comes with the latest 12th Gen Intel Core i5/i7 processor and Thunderbolt 4 and is now verified as an Intel Evo device, which Microsoft says means it’s over 50 percent more powerful than its predecessor. There's no AMD option this time around, unfortunately.

Considerably more businesses running Windows 7 than Windows 11

After Microsoft launched Windows 10 back in 2015 it devoted a lot of time and resources to -- shall we say -- 'encouraging' people and businesses to make the switch from Windows 7, even kindly going as far as to automatically upgrading their systems for them.

Things are very different with Windows 11 as Microsoft is happy for the new OS to coexist alongside its predecessor, for the time being at least. There is a downside to this approach however, as it means there’s not the rush to upgrade that Microsoft will have been hoping for, to the point where significantly more businesses are running Windows 7 than Windows 11, despite the former having reached end of life ages ago.
