Zero Trust: Moving beyond the chewy centre of cybersecurity

Zero-Trust

As modern technology becomes increasingly complex, so does the task of securing it. Adding to the complexity is the proliferation of decentralised technology such as cloud adoption and IoT (Internet of Things), and the move to remote working which have changed how cybersecurity experts craft the defences for their systems.

In simpler days, IT systems were comparatively easy to ring-fence, as there was a solidly defined corporate security perimeter, or “trust boundary.” This formed the basis of the classic, trust-based security strategy, where any user inside the boundary was implicitly trusted by default, and anyone outside the boundary was denied access. Being connected to the private network was the only verifiable credential needed to access the system and all its data.

Third-party breaches create network weak spots

Network security

A new report from Black Kite shows how third-party data breaches create critical weak spots in extended networks, potentially leaving businesses open to cyber attacks, which can have a negative ripple effect across the organization and its stakeholders.

The report is based on analysis of 81 vendor breaches impacting 251 companies in 2023. Unauthorized network access was the leading cause of breaches, accounting for over half (53 percent) of third-party breach incidents. Google Research unveils AI-driven global flood forecasting system

Google Research has made a significant breakthrough in global flood forecasting, utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to expand access to reliable flood forecasts, particularly in regions where data is scarce. Floods, being the most common natural disaster, inflict approximately $50 billion in financial damages annually and affect nearly 1.5 billion people worldwide. The advent of this AI-based system marks a crucial step in improving early warning systems, potentially saving thousands of lives each year.

The research showcases the use of machine learning (ML) technologies to enhance flood forecasting on a global scale. This advancement has extended the reliability of nowcasts from zero to five days on average and has improved forecasts across Africa and Asia to levels comparable to those in Europe. The evaluation of these models was conducted in collaboration with the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF).
