Hackers exploit zero day before enterprises can patch
Cybercriminals exploited the new CVE-2021-40444 remote code execution zero-day a week before the patch was issued on September 14, according to the latest report from HP Wolf Security.
Researchers also saw scripts that automated the creation of the exploit on Github on the 10th, making it easier for less-sophisticated attackers to use the exploit against vulnerable organisations.

Be part of a cybersecurity world record attempt
It's Cybersecurity Awareness Month and also Serious Security Week. To mark these events, cybersecurity companies KnowBe4 and OneLogin are partnering with Security Serious in a bid to set a brand new Guinness World Record for the most views of a cyber security lesson video on YouTube in 24 hours.
The record attempt will take place starting today, October 14th at 11am EDT, (8am PDT, 4pm BST) and will see KnowBe4 and OneLogin provide a 45-minute training session that will be live-streamed via YouTube.

Why VPNs make remote access less secure and what to do about it
Virtual private networks (VPNs) were introduced roughly a quarter of a century ago. The premise at the time was solid: Create an encrypted tunnel from a computer to a network so remote users could have secure access to company resources and communications. Although they were slow and time consuming for IT to administer, VPNs gained traction because they met the primary objective -- the connections were secure...or at least secure enough.
Today, it’s a different story. Where VPNs were uncommon 20 years ago, now they’re ubiquitous. The overpromise of technology
Last month on Twitter, tech writer Casey Newton posted the above pic, observing that he sees it all over San Francisco. "This ad is all over SF and I can’t decide what I dislike more: the wild overpromising or the total lack of information about what it does," he said.
I’ve noticed the same ad but it didn’t register as much with me as it did with Casey because these messages have finally exhausted me. It’s because the constant overpromise of technology has been going on for years. From a well-founded and ongoing skepticism about what AI actually is and can be, to the ill-founded hype that touches almost anything tech-related these days, both the perception and reality of technology need an adjustment.
Warning: Microsoft's first update for Windows 11 makes AMD system performance 'much worse'
Among the problems with Windows 11 is a worrying issue with reduced performance on some AMD processors. Both AMD and Microsoft are busy working on fixes, but if you were hoping that the first update for Windows 11 was going to help, think again.
With the release of KB5006674, Microsoft has addressed a known networking issue with Windows 11, but has failed to do anything about poor AMD performance. But things are even worse than that. Reports and benchmarks suggest that performance on AMD systems has been even further reduced by this update.
