Apple launches pricey 16-inch MacBook Pro complete with Magic Keyboard
Apple has finally launched its 16-inch MacBook Pro after a seemingly endless string of rumors and speculation.
Besides the size of the 6K screen, there are several notable features of this new "pro notebook" -- six speakers and three microphones for professional sound, and a Magic Keyboard with scissor keys. Pricing for the laptop starts at $2,399, but a fully loaded model will set you back an incredible $6,099.
Cyber incident ripple effects lead to increased losses
Cybersecurity incidents that involve more than one party incur financial losses 13 times greater than those contained within a single organization according to a new report.
The study carried out by the Cyentia Institute for RiskRecon analyzed over 800 cyber incidents and their 'ripple effect' on multiple downstream organizations.
Almost three quarters of enterprises are bringing applications back on premises
Applications are migrating away from the public cloud and back to on-premise infrastructures, with 73 percent of respondents to a new study reporting that they are moving some applications off the public cloud and back on premises.
The report from enterprise cloud computing company Nutanix shows 22 percent of those users are moving five or more applications back in house.
Cybercriminals step up attacks on the healthcare sector
Comparing all of 2018 against just the first three quarters of 2019 has seen a 60 percent increase in threat detections at healthcare organizations, according to a new report from Malwarebytes.
The industry has been overwhelmingly targeted by Trojan malware during the last year, with attacks increased by 82 percent in Q3 2019 over the previous quarter. The two most dangerous Trojans of 2018–2019 for all industries, Emotet and TrickBot, were the two main culprits.
Walmart Online Grocery gets Siri support
Walmart stores are fairly ubiquitous in the USA. The retailer sells pretty much everything too. For instance, in one outing, you can buy tires, a gallon of milk, and a pair of shoes. Are the stores the most clean or well organized? No, not at all. In fact, a trip to Walmart can feel like a journey to hell, but overall, they provide a passable shopping experience.
Believe it or not, some people do their food shopping at Walmart too, as many of the stores have full grocery sections, including fresh produce. While in Florida on vacation earlier this year, I even encountered a dedicated Walmart grocery store --- it only sold food. Walmart even lets you do your grocery shopping online (pickup or delivery), including by voice, thanks to its Voice Order feature. To make this feature better, Walmart has now added Siri support. Yes, you can use the voice assistant on your Apple device to add items to your online Walmart grocery cart.
Mozilla, Intel, Red Hat and Fastly join forces, forming Bytecode Alliance to create new software foundations
Four of the biggest names in technology -- Mozilla, Intel, Red Hat and Fastly -- have come together to create the Bytecode Alliance. The joining of forces sees the birth of an, "open source community dedicated to creating new software foundations, building on standards such as WebAssembly and WebAssembly System Interface (WASI)".
One of the aims is to take WebAssembly outside of browsers, taking whatever steps are necessary to ensure a secure ecosystem. More companies are expected to join the four founding member in the coming years.
The Facebook app could be secretly using your iPhone camera behind your back
Facebook is hardy a name that synonymous with privacy, and a newly discovered issue with the iOS version of the Facebook app does nothing to improve the situation.
Web designer Joshua Maddux was alarmed to find that the app was secretly using the camera on his iPhone as he scrolled through his Facebook feed. The problem has been confirmed by others, but it appears to only affects certain iPhones and certain versions of iOS.
Facebook Pay launches in the US, with payment options in Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram
Facebook has launched a new payment service that can be used to send money and buy goods and services from within its apps -- and it's nothing to do with Libra.
The service is called Facebook Pay; it's available in the US for now, but it will expand into more countries in due course. The service allows for payments to be made in Facebook, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram. Given the social network's reputation for privacy, it remains to be seen whether people trust it as much as the likes of Google Pay and Apple Pay.

Senior professionals not confident in their security solutions
More than a third of senior security professionals aren't confident in their choice of security solution and as a result could be put in compromising positions as the organization uses its security posture as a selling point.
This is among the findings of the latest Cyber Confidence Report from Nominet. When asked how confident they were in an organisation’s final choice of security solutions, only 34 percent of CISOs say that they are only somewhat or slightly confident.
