LXtory shares screenshots to Imgur, Gyazo, Puush, Dropbox, Google Drive and FTP
LXtory is an open-source tool for capture screenshots, saving the results locally or uploading them to Imgur or other sites. It’s a familiar idea, and the program interface didn’t impress us, either. Calling it "unfinished" would be a compliment -- it’s so basic that it barely looks started.
Despite its lack of visual appeal, LXtory does have some interesting features. There’s support for capturing the complete desktop, specific windows or a chosen window. It also captures windows using Direct3D, and can record what happens in a selected area as an animated GIF.
Majority of CEOs are not engaging with social media
A new study into the social media habits of Fortune 500 CEOs reveals that only 40 percent were active on one of the six major social networks (Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube) in 2016.
The study from business cloud platform Domo and CEO.com also shows that despite 75 chief executive changes occurring in this group in 2016 there's been no significant impact on social media use.
Unsecured IoT devices pose major security risk
New research from the Ponemon Institute and risk assurance body Shared Assesments reveals a high level of concern among organizations about the security of IoT, yet a gap in understanding of how to mitigate and communicate the risks, especially as it relates to third parties.
The study of 553 individuals in industries such as financial services and healthcare reveals that 76 percent say a DDoS attack involving an unsecured IoT device is likely to occur within the next two years.
TheShadowBrokers ditch Bitcoin in favour of Zcash as details emerge of monthly exploit subscription service
TheShadowBrokers, the hacking group behind the leak of NSA malware, has announced further details of the "Data Dump of the Month" subscription service it has previously talked about. Now known as "TheShadowBrokers Monthly Dump Service," the launch sees the group switching from Bitcoin to Zcash as its currency of choice.
Signing up for the service will set interested parties back 100 ZEC (Zcash). As this equates to over $20,000, it's not a subscription that many people are likely to be taking out, particularly as there is no evidence that the group has more exploits to offer. The hacking group has previously said that it has Windows 10 vulnerabilities to expose.
Microsoft shows off new Windows Mixed Reality headsets from Dell, Lenovo, and ASUS
At Build earlier this month, Microsoft announced Windows Mixed Reality dev kits from Acer and HP, and said that new products from other partners would be coming later in the year.
At Computex today, Microsoft revealed future headsets from ASUS, Lenovo, and Dell that are set to go into production soon and bring Mixed Reality to the masses. Each has something different to offer.
Now is the time to tap Amazon for refunds for unauthorized in-app purchases made by your kids
It's just over a year since a federal judge ruled that Amazon was liable for the unauthorized in-app purchases made by children. Now the FTC has announced that Amazon is starting to offer refunds for these purchases.
There are said to be more than $70 million in charges from the period between November 2011 and May 2016, and customers now have until the end of May next year to get in touch with Amazon to get their money back.
Nest reveals Cam IQ, an AI-powered 4K security camera with facial recognition
Google-owned Nest has unveiled the latest addition to its range of smart products -- the Nest Cam IQ. The new security camera not only boasts a 4K video sensor, but builds upon the motion detection feature offered by other similar cameras by adding facial recognition.
What this means is that the Nest Cam IQ is able to send out personalized alerts when it detects the presence of a particular person -- such as when your kids arrive home from school -- but it can also send out warnings when an unrecognized person is spotted. There's even Night Vision so it functions as a nighttime security camera.
Twitter now handles DMs from strangers differently
Taking a leaf out of Facebook's, er, book, Twitter has introduced a new filtering system for Direct Messages. Now if you receive a DM from someone you don’t follow, it will be channeled to a new Requests folder rather than appearing in your Inbox.
The new system gives you a chance to review messages from unknown senders before you decide whether to continue the conversation. It's a simple system that's very similar to Facebook Message Requests, and it's in the process of rolling out at the moment.
How to find the right data center partner
With most businesses today choosing to migrate their IT infrastructure to the cloud, understanding the business benefits and selecting the right data center provider is fundamental to the decision-making process. The UK is leading the way in the adoption of data centers and is the largest thirty-party data center country market within the EU.
Data centers provide the perfect environment to host company data, applications and servers in a secure location, allowing businesses to operate more efficiently, reduce costs, increase resilience and become more agile. Strategically migrating to the cloud will further contribute to long-term growth revenue, due to the continued adoption of cloud based collaboration technologies that eliminate physical and geographical barriers.
US and Europe have different ideas about data and privacy
With a recent, but less publicized executive order from President Trump, there are things happening on both sides of the Atlantic with regard to personal data, and it looks like the US and the EU have very different ideas about which direction to take.
We all leave a digital trail these days, just going about our daily business. Much of it we don't think about, and we often consciously choose to trade this personal data ourselves, in exchange for free services. Think about it, your Internet searches, social media, the websites you visit and your location while you're doing it, even exercise activity and your home heating usage via a smart thermostat, all have data harvested and monetized by big business.
Huawei Watch 2 Classic Android Wear 2.0 smartwatch now available in USA
While smartwatches aren't exactly lighting the world on fire as many manufacturers had hoped, it is still a fairly respectable segment. Let's face it, as the smartphone and tablet markets reach full saturation in the USA, companies will turn to things like wearables to hopefully make up for it.
Huawei is one such company that is focusing on smartwatches, but it is also expanding into Windows PCs too. The manufacturer focuses on a wise combination of value and elegance, producing desirable products at affordable prices. Today, Huawei announces that its Watch 2 Classic Android Wear smartwatch is finally available in the USA. The device has a 390x390 AMOLED screen and can play locally-stored music from Google Play. It of course has GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi.

What's a good, modern backup strategy?
A revolution is in the offing for one of the most time-honored and familiar IT rituals: data backup. As digital businesses continue to multiply the volume of incoming data, the average enterprise backup has reached a petabyte or more in scale. This is pushing conventional storage techniques past their inherent limitations, and certainly beyond sustainable cost.
Backups matter, and CTOs & CIOs know it. Data is central to the success of business, so losing it -- even losing access for hours or days -- affects productivity and profitability. In fact, according to the Gartner 2016 CIO Agenda Report, "Digital business is a reality now, pointing the way to competitive advantage."
