The passwords most likely to get you hacked

Even as we shift to other forms of authentication, passwords aren't going away anytime soon. New research from Peec AI has analyzed over 100 million leaked passwords to uncover the most common words and phrases used, which also of course are the ones most likely to get your account compromised.

There are some interesting findings. Names are still a popular choice with ‘Michael’ one of the most commonly used as a password, included in 107,678 of those analyzed. ‘Daniel’ is the second most used name, with a count of 99,399 passwords. Other popular choices include ‘Ashley’, ‘Jessica’, ‘Charlie’, ‘Jordan’ and ‘Michelle’.

Breaking the Password Manager component out of the Chrome browser is an interesting move. There is no real reason for Google doing so other than making it slightly easier to access saved passwords and usernames.

Sudden Dropbox Passwords closure leaves users seeking alternatives

Dropbox has suddenly announced that it plans to discontinue its password manager, Dropbox Passwords. With the discontinuation coming at the end of October, users are left with very little time to find an alternative service.

The company is best known for its cloud storage service, and in announcing the impending shuttering of Dropbox Passwords it says that it wants “to focus on enhancing other features in our core product”. More than just closing down the password management side of things, Dropbox is also bringing dark web monitoring to an end.

Identity security company 1Password is announcing that it will become Oracle Red Bull Racing's exclusive cybersecurity partner in a multi-year deal.

The Formula 1 team will implement 1Password Extended Access Management to strengthen its security posture and safeguard critical information across devices, applications, and locations. The 1Password branding will also be shown on the steering wheel screen of both Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson’s RB21 cars.

Google issues apology for Chrome flaw that broke its password manager

Many users are locked out of LastPass after authenticator app reset

The support forums of password management tool LastPass are filling up with complaints from confused and disgruntled users who found themselves locked out of their accounts. The problems stem from a forced authenticator app reset implanted by the company following a series of security incidents last year.

Starting last month, LastPass forcibly logged out users and required them to reset their multifactor authentication (MFA) apps such as Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator. But having followed the instructions given by the company, large numbers of users report that they are unable to access their LastPass vaults after being locked out their accounts.

75 percent of people risk being hacked through poor password practice

New research into the password habits of over 8,000 individuals across the UK, France and Germany shows 75 percent of people don't adhere to widely accepted password best practices, putting themselves at risk.

The study from Keeper Security shows 64 percent are either using weak passwords or repeat variations of passwords to protect their online accounts. More than a third of people also admit to feeling overwhelmed when it comes to taking action to improve their cybersecurity.
