The trouble with open source research on the web

Every open source research project -- no matter how simple or complex -- starts with browsing the internet. But researchers should know that their identity can be obtained through a number of basic techniques, which could have consequences ranging from modified data to directed cyber attacks or worse.
Even the simplest of website visits will expose significant details about your location and your device, and pretty much any site you visit will drop code on your computer to track what you’re doing as you traverse the internet. Most of the time, this exchange is benign, but there can be times when content will be modified or attacks launched based on the identity of the user.
Management underestimates the time and cost needed for the cloud

While 96 percent of US enterprises expect to increase their investment in cloud management over the next five years, the majority of IT decision makers are not using those services to their fullest potential according to a new study.
The survey findings from Wakefield Research and cloud automation specialist Logicworks show that 80 percent of the 400 surveyed IT decision makers believe that their company's leadership team underestimates the time and cost required to maintain resources in the cloud.

Intelligent connectors help integrate enterprise data and applications

Microsoft Rewards replaces Bing Rewards -- collect points to get free stuff!

Microsoft's point-collecting program Bing Rewards is being renamed Microsoft Rewards. It will work in very much the same way as before (collect points and use them to buy games, apps, movies and so on), but there are a few changes that accompany the rebranding.
As before, Microsoft Rewards will be limited to the US and India, and the program lets you earn points by shopping in the Microsoft Store and Windows Store as well as searching with Bing and simply browsing with Microsoft Edge. If you're a seasoned user, there are a few changes to note.
Monitor emoji usage in real-time

Emoji are used for everything from basic communication, to diversity promotion, and even as a means of learning to code. While dismissed by some as the language of the millennial or the hard-of-thinking, emoji have their place in the modern lexicon, and an Australian company has launched a tool to show how they are being used.
Ad agency The Works has created a real-time emoji tracker that reveals how the handy little icons are being used right now. The company says of the recent additions to our language, "this is not a bastardisation but the next evolution of how we communicate". So what's the most popular emoji at the moment?
HMA! aims to bring VPN to the masses

Virtual private networks (VPNs) are an effective way of masking your internet activity when using public networks.
However, they've always seemed a bit geeky, which puts many everyday internet users off using them. VPN specialist Hide My Ass! (HMA!) is aiming to change that with a new version of its product aimed at people who haven't previously used a VPN.
UAC vulnerability in Windows 7 and Windows 10 allows for traceless code execution

Windows' User Account Control (UAC) feature was designed to help keep computers safe from malicious software installations, but there are already at least a couple of ways to bypass it. A new technique for circumventing UAC not only makes it possible to execute commands on a computer, but to do so without leaving a single trace.
Security researchers Matt Nelson and Matt Graeber discovered the vulnerability and developed a proof-of-concept exploit. The pair tested the exploit on Windows 7 and Windows 10, but say that the technique can be used to bypass security on any version of Windows that uses UAC.

Intel Joule SOM runs Ubuntu Core Linux and makes Raspberry Pi look like garbage

The original Raspberry Pi sparked the creativity of many developers and students, but it was woefully underpowered. Through several iterations, however, it slowly became more powerful. While the most recent version -- the Raspberry Pi 3 -- has a much more capable processor, some developers will still want even more horsepower.
Today, Intel announces a maker board that puts the Raspberry Pi 3 to shame. The Joule system-on-module mini-computer features RealSense camera support and runs Ubuntu Linux Core. Best of all, its specs are very impressive for what it is.
Missing the NFL pre-season? It's not too late to catch it

This past weekend the NFL pre-season got underway with games over several days. The first of four weeks of action that tell you little about how your team will really be because the play calling is generic in an effort to hide real game plans.
Depending on the market you live in you'll get your local team's game and a couple of others, but what if you want them all? What if you're a fan of an out-of-market team. Say you're a Cowboys fan living in Philadelphia -- aside from getting abuse, you can also get the Dallas games, and every other team.

Believe the hype and you're probably under the impression that virtual reality, augmented reality, or some hybrid of the two is where the future of computing lies.
Microsoft certainly thinks that AR/VR has an important role to play and today the company announced that an update to Windows 10 next year will bring Windows Holographic to everyone. The company is working with Intel to come up with the specification for mixed reality ready PCs and head mounted displays.
Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update finally rolling out to users

It’s clear by the delay in pushing out finished versions that Windows 10 Mobile is far from a priority for Microsoft. That’s understandable, given the tiny number of compatible handsets out there, but even so, it’s a frustrating situation for fans of Microsoft’s mobile platform.
If you’ve been waiting, and waiting, for the Anniversary Update to arrive on your Windows Phone, the good news is Microsoft is finally rolling it out, two weeks after the big OS update hit PCs, and a week after it was expected.
