Belkin launches CONNECT USB-C 6-in-1 Multiport Hub with Mount for Apple iMac

USB-C docking stations and hubs are a dime a dozen these days. There are so many such products that can transform a single USB-C port into several others. Quite frankly, it is almost impossible to get noticed with such an adapter these days.

With all of that said, a new USB-C adapter from Belkin has managed to grab my attention. Called "CONNECT USB-C 6-in-1 Multiport Hub with Mount," it has a unique feature that I find quite neat. You see, the "mount" in the product's name indicates that it can be attached to the back of a computer, such as Apple iMac.

Apple's Self Service Repair program criticized for making 'MacBooks seem less repairable'

Apple Self Service Repair

Some months after launching a self-repair program that gave iPhone owners the opportunity to fix their own devices, Apple expanded it to include MacBook air and MacBook Pro notebooks. On the face of things this is a great move, but the program has been criticized for not only managing to make MacBooks seem less repairable, but also for "presenting DIY repairers with an excruciating gauntlet of hurdles".

The criticism comes from none other than iFixit, a site well known for its device teardowns and the repairability ratings it assigns them. Singled out for particular attention is the process of replacing a MacBook Pro battery, the instructions for which stretch to an incredible 162 pages.

Steve Jobs' Apple-1 Computer prototype sells at auction for $677,196

Apple famously began life in Steve Jobs' parents' home in Los Altos, California, firstly in his bedroom, before relocating to the garage.

For obvious reasons, items from the early days of what was to become to a tech behemoth are hugely interesting to collectors and a rare Apple-1 prototype, has just sold for eye-watering figure at auction.

Apple will provide you with everything you need to repair your own MacBook Pro or MacBook Air

Apple Self Service Repair

Earlier in the year, Apple launched its self repair program, giving iPhone users the option of fixing their own phones. As well as providing instruction manuals and selling the parts, tool rental is also part of the program.

Now Apple has announced that it is expanding the Self Service Repair to include MacBook Air and MacBook Pro notebooks -- provided they are fitted with the M1 family of chips, that is. The company says that the program will expand to include additional Mac models soon, and that the iPhone self-repair service will expand out of the US to Europe and beyond.

Apple celebrates Shazam's 20th birthday -- listen to the most Shazamed songs from the past two decades here

I regularly use Shazam to identify songs playing when I’m out and about. It has helped me to discover a number of lesser known artists over the years who have gone on to become firm favorites of mine.

Today, Shazam turns 20 and Apple says the service, which it acquired back in 2018, has now surpassed 70 billion song recognitions. To mark this major milestone, Apple has produced a special playlist of the most Shazamed songs of each calendar year for the past 20 years, and you can listen to them right here.

Apple logo and padlock

Apple has issued a warning about a security flaw that could be used to take full control of iPhones, iPads and Macs. The company says that the vulnerability "may have been actively exploited" and has issued a slew of updates to patch the problem.

Going some way to prove that it is not just Windows that suffers serious security issues, this vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2022-32893. The potential impact of the flaw is so wide because it stems from a bug in Safari’s WebKit rendering engine.

Das Keyboard launches MacTigr wired mechanical keyboard for Mac

While Apple's Magic Keyboards are actually quite good (unlike its terrible Magic Mouse), there is one unfortunate fact -- the company simply doesn't make a mechanical keyboard. And so, if you want such a keyboard for your Mac, you will have to depend on a third-party company. The problem there, however, is there are so many keyboard makers these days, it can be hard to know which are actually good. Sadly, there are many that are terrible.

Well, folks, Das Keyboard has a new Apple-focused USB-C keyboard called "MacTigr," and if you aren't aware, that company is one of the most respected keyboard manufacturers out there. Seriously, you can never go wrong with a Das Keyboard product. Not only is MacTigr built like tank, the wired keyboard is loaded with many excellent features.

Google wants to shame Apple into adopting RCS in its Messages app

RCS is a cross-platform messaging protocol designed as a successor to the outdated SMS and MMS standards, and Google today launches a new website to try and shame Apple into adopting it.

If you have an iPhone and message Android-owning friends regularly using the Apple’s Messages app, then you’ll know that the message bubbles show up in different colors -- blue for fellow iPhone owners, and green for those on Android. However, you might also have encountered problems like low res photos and videos, missing read receipts and typing indicators, and broken group chats when engaging in cross-platform messaging. This, Google says bluntly, is down to Apple.

Apple's rumored VR headset will be huge for the enterprise: Here's what IT needs to be thinking about now

After many years of speculation, Apple’s entrance into the VR/AR market is finally imminent. CEO Tim Cook hinted in an interview last month that he is "incredibly excited about AR" and to "stay tuned" to see what Apple has to offer. The Board has allegedly tested a headset out. The latest rumors suggest that Apple will unveil something by January 2023.

Whenever it happens, Apple releasing some sort of VR/AR device will be an absolute game changer for the industry. Apple moves markets. Its technology is always excellent. It knows how to drive mass appeal. Apple’s headset will, without a doubt, help push XR to widespread adoption, and maybe not in ways you’d expect. When people think of Apple products, their mind typically goes to consumer technology -- but it’s actually the enterprise that will likely come first in reaping the benefits of this new headset.

beyerdynamic Free BYRD wireless earbuds are a legit alternative to Apple AirPods Pro

Apple's AirPods Pro wireless earbuds are cool, but they are far from perfect. They are uncomfortable and not at all attractive -- the white stems that protrude from your ears are very unsightly. Not to mention, they are only offered in white -- don't like that color? Sucks for you. Worst of all, most of the unique features, such as spatial audio, are only compatible with Apple devices like iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

If you are an Android and/or Windows user that wants some premium wireless earbuds that aren't made by Apple, then today, you are in luck. The company beyerdynamic has launched its first-ever "True Wireless" earbuds, and they look incredible. Called "Free BYRD," these Bluetooth earbuds are discreet, attractive, come in two colors, and best of all, beyerdynamic promises exceptional audio quality.

Joe Biden gives deceased Apple Co-founder Steve Jobs Presidential Medal of Freedom

Steve Jobs is dead. The Apple Co-founder is long dead, in fact. You see, the iPhone-inventor died way back in 2011 -- more than a decade ago. And yet, President Joe Biden has decided to give Jobs an award... in 2022. Yes, really.

No, Joe Biden is not confused, nor did the current President make a mistake. Actually, the leader of the USA has intentionally chosen to bestow the late Steve Jobs with a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom. Even though Jobs is not currently alive, I am sure his family will appreciate the much-deserved honor.

Entry-level 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro has significantly slower SSD than M1 models

Apple M2 chip

If you opt for the base model of Apple's 13-inch MacBook Pro with the company’s new M2 chip, you might end up being disappointed by the performance.

Tests have revealed that the entry-level 256GB model, priced at $1,299, have significantly slower SSDs than their M1-based counterparts. And the difference really is significant; benchmarks shows that that SSD read speeds are 50 percent slower in the latest models. Write speeds are also slower, although not quite so dramatically. So, is the M2 MacBook Pro worse than the M1 version?

It won't be long until the iPhone ditches the Lightning connector in favor of USB-C, thanks to the EU

USB-C is now all-but ubiquitous as a connection and charger type for everything from smartphones and webcams to laptops and Bluetooth speakers. There are some notable exceptions, of course, not least of which is Apple's iPhone.

Although just about every Android phone has made the switch to USB-C, Apple has decided to doggedly hang on to its proprietary Lightning connector for the iPhone. But the EU could soon force the company's hand as it moves towards implementing a legal requirement for all phones to have USB-C port in Europe.
